I am fascinated by the steampunk style. I'm not much for Victorian costumes, but I adore everything with that steampunk touch (for costumes and jewelry and whatnot, I'm not so much a fan of the steampunk literary movement). I also found myself suddenly falling in love with Dickens after finding steampunk.

Steampunk is a bit edgy, and strange, and lovely, while containing all the best bits of the mechanical age (gears are just overlooked in a century of microchips) but not neglecting the more organic aspects. Oh, and I like mad science, because it pokes fun at a science that often takes itself much too seriously. My amateur prediction is that steampunk will gradually be accepted and eventually there will be a sort of steampunk available in malls and whatnot, in much the same way that punk has become somewhat mainstream.

Ooh. That would be awesome. I'd love some steampunky stuff too, only I'm not really sure how to put any decent outfits together, mostly--well, no, I could, I'd just never normally wear them.

See, I have a reasonable idea of what sort of costume to put together, because I have a lovely hat that is sort of a newsies brown hat, and a great brown button up shirt with embroidery, and I just found these great River like black boots that lace up the front and look vaguely like combat boots, only cuter, and I have a skirt that goes, but I don't have any of the touches that would make it steampunk. Even if I did, I don't think I quite have the courage to pull it off.

Yeah, I'd have that problem too. If I actually managed to put together something that was comfortable and practical and looked steampunk, I'd be thrilled...but I'm also not sure I'd be brave enough to wear it in public, which probably means I wouldn't have quite what's needed to pull it off.

I just adore steampunk--I think you're right that bits of steampunk will work their way into the mainstream, especially with the passion for 'vintage'. There's something just graceful and enduring about that style that really resonates where plastic electronics are cold and grubby and so very breakable and brittle and obnoxious....And gears are so lovely.

And I would give a lot (although not the couple of thousand dollars that they go for) for a beautiful steampunk typewriter-style keyboard...so much more fun to write with.

I like plastic electronic type things, because little tiny resistors are beautiful (I have a pair of resistor earrings that I made), as are capacitors, and circuit boards. The impossibly fine detail makes me happy. And the sleek simplicity appeals to me. But I also like the gears which are deceptively simple, and reminiscent of something older.

Oh, the steampunk style keyboards are lovely.

I kind of love circuit boards. They look like miniature cities. I'm not sure why they fascinate me so much, but they do.

Steampunk keyboards? Like these? They're shiny.

I love steampunk, though I don't wear anything remotely like it and I don't know if it's a style I could pull off without looking ridiculous (but oh I love it!). But then again, it's not that surprising that like the aesthetic so much when I also like Victorian fashions, and this is an edgier, more technical slant on them.

I think you're right that eventually it will become more mainstream. Hopefully it can do so--and therefor be both affordable and readily available--without losing it's charm.
