"See how I'm not hitting him? I think I've grown." - Mal in Shindig
At work, one of my friends from ages ago is working in a different department (as a summer job, she's still in college). Anywho, she has been sort of flirting with a guy who is at least eight years older, and someone I know she isn't interested in, because she told me. But I didn't say a single, solitary thing to her about it, because it is only the summer anyways, and I have learned my lesson about being nosy when it isn't really wanted. And I felt weird, because I know I prolly would have said something a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if this is better, or worse, but it is different, and shows that I can learn from experience after all.
Otherwise, I am doing much less frazzled and upset today. Not quite up to the exhilerating "I think I might be over being depressed" stage of Monday morning, but yanno, not feeling as though I might burst into tears all day long like yesterday. And things do not seem as bleak all around, for which I am grateful.
Book Haul! The little used bookstore near my work is going out of business (which is sad, but not terribly so, because it was a lousy used bookstore, without Garth Nix, Robin McKinley, or Elizabeth Moon, and all the books were disorganized, but not in a nice, friendly way, but in a "I don't want to bother so I'll dump them all in boxes on the floor" way). So all the books were a quarter, each. I bought many beautiful books. *hugs them all* The sad thing, though, was that not only were there books everywhere (many more on the floor, as some shelving was gone), there were boxes upon boxes out back. Stacked, with no way to get to all of them. And some had gotten wet (and more got wet on Tuesday, when it rained a little). I wanted to buy up every single one, even all the horrid romance novels with the terrible covers, and open up a proper used bookstore with everything on shelves, and more or less organized, and a cat. It made me sad and wistful to see all the poor books like that.
Haul for Monday:
- The Little Country by Charles DeLint (have currently been on a DeLint kick, which I blame on Zannachan)
- The Epic of Gilgamesh (because I have never read it)
- The Farthest Shore by Ursula K. Le Guin (I now have the first and third books of the Earthsea trilogy)
- The Year of the Griffin by Diana Wynne Jones (in hardback, no less)
- Tales from the Arabian Nights (I've been wanting something like this)
Total spent: $1.34
Haul for Tuesday:
- Rimrunners by C.J. Cherryh
- Idylls of the King by Tennyson (even if I don't like it, it has the most terrific 1960's cover)
- The Testament by John Grisham (my dear friend Maggie told me to buy it, so I did)
- The Compass Rose by Ursula K. LeGuin (an anthology, because it has a story called Schroedinger's cat, so what's not to like?)
- The Book of Merlyn by T.H. White (because I only own The Once and Future King, and I needed it)
- She by H. Rider Haggard (I liked it when I read it)
- The Marble Faun by Nathaniel Hawthorne (with the bestest cover, just like when I first read it in high school)
- Le Morte D'Arthur (Vol. I) by Sir Thomas Malory (Penguin Classic, and while I eventually want a huge, all in one, illustrated copy, this will be more convenient to haul around)
- Le Morte D'Arthur (Vol. II)
- At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald (I'm sure someone I know needs a copy)
- Riddle of Stars by Patricia McKillip (it is the Riddlemaster trilogy, and it is in hardback, and I'm sure *someone* I know will someday need to read it)
- the first book of the Zion Chronicles by Brock and Bodie Thoene (bought it for a friend to read, already gave it away)
Total spent: $3.22
Oh, and today at the library (ongoing) booksale, I found two picture books:
- The Snow Queen, illustrated by Mary Engelbreit (it is pretty, and in beautiful shape)
- King Bidgood's in the Bathtub (a classic from my childhood, which is impossible to find)
Total spent: $6.00 (I bought them both because I *knew* I would regret it if I didn't)
Grand total:
19 books
$10.56
And now I really have no bookspace. Time to reorganize my poor bookshelves.
