My dream job involves an office cat. I never tell people this when they ask what my ideal job is (they are just trying to make light conversation). So, here follows my dream job.
There is an office cat. It is a friendly cat, the sort that winds around your ankles and sits on your lap whenever it can.
The office isn't strictly an office; it is a converted house. It is full of windows and light. The offices are converted bedrooms, and everyone has their own space with a door that closes, for when they don't feel like chatting. The kitchen is still a full kitchen, and the pantry is stocked with necessities like brownies and cereal. The dining room has a huge table for eating lunch and for meetings.
Once a week, the giant dining room table is used to play collaborative games, like Arkham Horror, ostensibly as a team building exercise but mostly because everyone who works here thinks collaboratively rather than competitively. In fact, the interview for the job involved a series of interviews, and then playing Elder Sign over lunch because anyone can look good in a job interview, but it is hard to fake being creative, thinking on your feet, and working together when playing a game. Everyone is friendly and encouraging.
The backyard has a huge tree and a picnic table.
Everyone works hard, but the standard is twenty or thirty hours a week. There are still benefits, but the management believes that life is more important than work. You have to get special approval to work more than thirty hours a week, and when you do, there is the expectation that you will take vacation because of it. You are encouraged to take vacation, because it is good for you.
I don't particularly care what the work itself is, because as long as it is worth doing and interesting (and not one of the few things I dislike), I would enjoy it.
I am not expecting to have any of this in a job, of course. It is just daydreaming. I particularly miss the office cat, though.
