One of my friends likes Twilight but not Gaudy Night. I have not yet disowned her, because there is still hope. She likes Narnia and is a rabid Buffy fan, so I hope that in time she may learn the awesomeness that is Dorothy Sayers.

To be perfectly candid with you, I've only read Gaudy Night once and I wasn't absolutely riveted.

But to prefer Twilight? I honour your perseverance!

Well, if you read all the Wimsey novels through from the beginning, I might be on speaking terms again . . . *wink*

Actually, somehow it makes it worse in my little head that she likes Twilight but not Gaudy Night. If she disliked both, she might simply not be much of a reader. If she liked both, she might simply be a less discriminating reader. But to like Twilight and dislike Gaudy Night . . . also, given reason is that she does not agree with Harriet Vane's personal morality. Umm, ok, well, I don't think Harriet Vane should have slept with that other artist guy either. But really, really, think that Sayers has lot's of important things to say about what a healthy relationship looks like, and I think that Wimsey/Vane is a much better, more realistic relationship than Bella/Edward. I would rather have someone who loves me for everything that is me and gives me distance and appreciates my intellect than an obsessive, stalker *vampire*.

I must admit, I couldn't get into Gaudy Night and never finished it--it just took too long to set up, and as it was my first book about them I didn't have any vested interested in any of the characters already in place to draw me in. So I am still open to the possibility of trying again with a better introduction book, but I wasn't blown away when I tried to read it.

Twilight has absolutely no appeal to me what's so ever. Though it's scarcely a fair competition since I have a vampire phobia. I didn't even get into Buffy, really--despite the fact that I strongly admired a lot about it, it still had vampires. I loved Firefly, however.

And I loved Narnia... until the last book. I hated the Last Battle as a kid and it hasn't gotten better with age. Not yet, anyway.

Please don't hate me!

*sigh* I don't, of course. I just happen to love the Last Battle, and was so blown away by Gaudy Night the first time I read it, and want everyone else to like it.
